Winter Preparedness

In the winter, it’s important to think ahead. Make a plan and have a winter kit prepared, especially if you’ll be traveling.

  • Extra Water
  • Clothing
  • Blankets
  • Mylar sheeting (the shiny, crinkly, space-age survival material that weighs almost nothing!)
  • Snow brush or shovel
  • Tire chains, traction mat, or other traction material

If you need to drive through slippery ice or snow, you can fit the tire chains around your vehicle’s tires to provide maximum traction. If you get stranded somewhere, a tire traction mat or other traction material can provide you with emergency traction for your tires in snow, ice, mud or sand. In a pinch, you can use cat litter for emergency traction, too!
